Independent & Assistant Living For the Elderly - Senior Homes & Assisted Living Facilities in Mount Horeb & Cross Plains Wisconsin
Girlie’s Manor was first opened in 1981 by Ann “Girlie” Stein. The name, Girlie, originated when Ann was first born in July of 1927; her aunt referred to her as “Little Girlie”. The name stayed with Ann her entire life. Prior to starting Girlie’s Manor in 1981, Ann had been a foster care mother since 1959 and owned and operated a day care for children. For Ann, caring for the elderly in an assistant living environment was just the natural next step. In 1981, the assisted living business was in its infancy stages in the Madison area. However, Ann was determined and started a successful business.
In 1987, Ann’s son, Lance, followed in his mother’s footsteps and opened an assistant living facility in Verona, WI, under the name Girlie’s Manor II. In 1996, Ann was looking to retire. Lance decided that his long-time friend, Doug, should join the family business; Doug had known Girlie and Lance for many years and had helped with Girlie’s daycare and foster care children. At that point, Lance and Doug took on responsibility for Ann’s assisted living home in Madison.
Back in 1981, Ann set the standard for providing quality care to the elderly in her assisted living home. Today, Girlie’s Manor continues that tradition. By being owner-operated, we are directly involved in every aspect of the day-to-day operations involving the business, buildings, residents and staff.
Because of health issues and the onset of Alzheimer’s, we had the privilege of having mom live the last seven years of her life at Girlie’s Manor. The experience of having her as a resident has allowed us to understand and appreciate what a family experiences when they choose to place a loved one in our care.
